Just Survive eventually dropped the H1Z1 moniker while King of the Hill was shortened to H1Z1. A little over a year later, Daybreak announced the game was being split into two separate projects - H1Z1: Just Survive and H1Z1: King of the Kill - each with their own dedicated development teams. H1Z1 originally launched as a Steam Early Access title on January 15, 2015. H1Z1 producer Terrence Yee said the entire development team has worked tirelessly to build on the game's early success, adding that they're thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response to H1Z1's PS4 debut. H1Z1, described by Daybreak as the original standalone battle royale shooter, has officially exited open beta and is now a fully free-to-play game on PlayStation 4. I wonder if GTA5 will be able to maintain its lead next month, too- there’s no major release for the PS4 in July either.Why it matters: PlayStation 4 gamers looking for an alternative to Fortnite may find solace in H1Z1, a free-to-play battle royale game from developer Daybreak Games that attracted more than 10 million new players during its first month in open beta. Instead, that honor goes to Daybreak’s H1Z1, which launched on PS4 last month, and managed to hit millions in downloads right away.
On the free to play side of things, this may surprise you, but Fortnite did not end up on top this month. Now, admittedly, there were no major releases on PS4 last month, so it kind of makes sense- but even so, the game managed to beat out far more recent releases such as Detroit: Become Human, Far Cry 5, and God of War, which is hugely impressive. And not just the retail sales charts, either- Sony reports, for example, that Grand Theft Auto 5 was the most downloaded game off of PSN last month. The title launched almost five years ago, and yet, even today, it continues to chart on sales charts around the world. There may never be a game like Grand Theft Auto 5 ever again.
